ABOUT THE COURSEs
The aim overall is to present the Buddha's teachings in a systematic, yet open-minded way which makes them relevant to your life, regardless of your religious persuasion.
All classes except the meditation class have the same structure. We have assigned readings each week with study questions, which are designed to deepen your integration of the subject matter. We then use the questions as the basis for discussion and further clarification in the next class.
Participants are encouraged to read and prepare for class, but the readings
are brief and the discussions always lively, meaningful, and full of humor.
Join us!
Each class includes 15-30 minutes of meditation practice.

Participants are encouraged to buy the texts by the first class.
The first class is free!
Palmo is available to speak at your school, business, club or church. Please see public talks page for details.

how to be happy
Buddhist teachings on cultivating happiness
The Buddha's first teaching was all about how to overcome suffering. He spent the rest of his life teaching others how to be happy. Rather than something that comes by chance, happiness is something we can create the causes for, something we can cultivate.
In this presentation Palmo shares the Buddha's practical teachings for developing more happiness in our lives.

understanding impermanence
The key to wisdom and well-being
Everything is impermanent--our possessions, relationships, life itself. Coming to terms with impermanence, even celebrating impermanence, is one of the major keys to wisdom and well-being. This is why the Buddha called the contemplation of impermanence the King of All Practices.
Learn how to use your understanding of impermanence to bring more peace and wisdom into your life.

KARMA: The law of Cause and Effect
How understanding cause and effect can empower our lives
The Buddha taught that positive actions bring happiness, while negative actions bring suffering. Understanding how this works means our suffering or happiness is in our own hands. We have the power to reduce the causes of suffering and increase the causes of happiness.
Being aware of the law of karma is also a powerful tool in developing compassion for ourselves and others.

the four immeasurables
Love, compassion, joy and equanimity
Immeasurable love is to have love for all beings without exception. Boundless compassion is to have no limits on who receives our compassion. Sympathetic joy, an antidote to jealousy, is to generate happiness for others when they are successful and happy. Equanimity, the ability to cultivate non-distinction between those we are close to and those who are distant, is what makes it all possible.
In this session we will discuss how to practice the Four Immeasurables in our lives.

The First Unitarian Church of Cleveland

Day & Time: Tuesdays 7:30 - 9:00 pm ......
